Benefits of education and training

Since 2000, Tim Ricketts has been teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) both in Australia and in South Korea. During his time in South Korea, he began to understand the thirst for English among our Asian neighbours. English has secured its place as the international language and is now considered essential rather than a luxury, especially for those intending on studying or working abroad.

Sourcing and applying for finance

In the late 1990’s, Jess Alvaro was enjoying travelling through Europe and Asia. As an interior design graduate, she held a particular interest in the design and architecture of the interior and exterior of many of the buildings that she saw in her travels.

Upon returning home, she was inspired to open her own interior design business. She felt that her experiences overseas would help her to create unique designs that wouldn’t be seen anywhere else in Australia. She also wanted to focus on the high end niche market, with a focus on exclusivity.

Why build a business plan?

Since 2001, Melissa Anderson had been working in the USA, teaching student’s history, which she studied at university and had a keen interest in. Upon returning home to Australia, she took up a history teaching position in a NSW high school.

Discussing her experience of working overseas with her students, she began to see a potential business opportunity emerging. Many of her students showed an interest in travelling to the USA and she knew that many of her American students had also been interested in visiting Australia.

Implementing an action plan

Thomas and his friend Alex have been operating ‘Develop Computing’, a small computer repair and upgrades business, since they left high school. They had good technical skills but no experience, and yet they managed to earn a decent living from the business for a number of years.

Thomas owned the business and completed most of the administrative work himself, with Alex employed as a full time computer repairer. They saved on expenses by operating the business from home and by using a small van to travel to customers’ homes and workplaces to carry out repairs and upgrades.

Katherine Luke has operated a small restaurant for more than three years, specialising in healthy and contemporary style food. The restaurant is located in central Melbourne, trading as “Yum! Yum!”.

Yum! Yum! has a moderately sized menu, offering a range of low fat, low cholesterol, nutritious foods made with natural ingredients.
