Benefits of education and training
Overview

Since 2000, Tim Ricketts has been teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) both in Australia and in South Korea. During his time in South Korea, he began to understand the thirst for English among our Asian neighbours. English has secured its place as the international language and is now considered essential rather than a luxury, especially for those intending on studying or working abroad.

It was during his time living and working in South Korea that he envisaged how great it would be to run English Study Tours in Australia. In doing this he would be able to combine his two passions, that is, Australia and teaching. He began to imagine himself conducting study tour programs in and around Sydney; teaching students English, whilst showcasing our stunning city and diverse culture. From a theoretical viewpoint, nothing can replace being fully immersed in the target language to assist in second language development.

Issue

Despite holding a Bachelor of Nursing, Masters of Education and Post Graduate Diploma in TESOL, Tim didn't have any real business training or qualifications. He spent many hours wrestling with ideas but found himself feeling frustrated and overwhelmed. He just had no idea where to start! During this time of searching, he was only able to secure casual teaching hours at a language school in Sydney.

Solution

In early 2007, he heard about the BEC Northside funded by the NSW Department of State and Regional Development, through a friend. It sounded like the missing link for him. The centre would give him the skills needed to prepare a business plan and start a business. In addition, he received business mentoring and support. It was suggested that Tim also do a Certificate IV Course in Small Business Management which he completed at BEC Northside in October 2007. He chose BEC Northside after reading about them in the local paper. As a teacher, Tim knew that adults make anxious learners but the team at BEC made him feel comfortable and supported from day one. The instructor, Robert, encouraged an open and free flowing lesson style, where the exchange of ideas and thoughts was encouraged. It's a real refining process, where you bring your business ideas, your vision and your passion and you charter a course to bring them to reality. Tim felt like he was part of something inspiring and meaningful.

Results

It's now over 12-months since he completed his Small Business Management Certificate at BEC Northside. His business, Y.E.S Education & Homestay has made it through the first year and is entering 2009 as a strong and viable organization. Briefly recapping the last year, Y.E.S Education & Homestay has run 3 English Study Tours for primary school students from South Korea; secured an agreement with the NSW Department of Education & Training allowing Tim to integrate his students into NSW Government Schools and registered over 100 homestay families. In addition, his private tutoring is in constant demand and he has launched a website www.yeseducation.net.au

Lesson Learnt
  • Tim needed the motivation and direction to transfer his dream into reality. He needed the steps to follow and needed to separate the theory into practical implementation.
